Richard Manley was a friend to many people at Sandwich Junior Senior High School and especially the Class of '88. Because of him, many of us have learned that nothing is more pre- cious than life and good health.
We will always remember Richie for the kind, gentle young man he was. He loved helping others and often helped his Dad at the fire station.
Although Richie spent the last two years of his young life at the vocation- al school, many of us remember the fun we had together in our junior high years.

The Sandwich soccer team finished with a suc- cessful 10-5-3 record. The team would have gone further in the State Tournament if not for injuries that sidelined three starting players near the end of the season. The team’s only losses came at the hands of Rockland, Dux- bury, Cohasset, Marion, and a fluke 1-0 loss to Abington. The high point of the season came right after Steven Corradi, Brendan Fish, Ste- ven Rivoira, and Darren Feeley were selected to the South Shore All-Star Team. Sandwich avenged a 2-2 Homecoming tie to Dennis-Yar- mouth by shutting them out 5-0 on their field. This year’s tri-captains, Steven Corradi, Bren- dan Fish, and Bruce Palmer, will be succeeded next season by Darren Feeley.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
This year’s seniors were a very productive group. The three captains were Steven Corradi, Brendan Fish, and Bruce Palmer. Steven was a South Shore League All-Star and, as the team’s leading scorer, tied John Wallace’s re- cord for total career points. Brendan Fish was also a South Shore League All-Star and Bruce received the team contributor award, along with Kyle Chaffee, who emerged as the starting goalie. Steven Rivoira was also a South Shore League All-Star and he was the team’s Most Valuable Player and received the best defense- man award. Darren FitzGerald received the most improved player award and the Booster Club award for Leadership, Sportsmanship, and Dedication. The last senior of the team was an exchange student from Spain, Isidoro deMi- guel Rubio. He received a Varsity Letter for participation.

Sandwich Field Hockey has seen its best year yet. They started their winning streak strong and furious with a State Championship in their eyes. Having an undefeated record, they won the South Shore League title. They had seven South Shore League All-Star players. Named to the team were: Kristie Case, Kim Chisholm, Alison Corradi, Wendy Fleet, Shay Perry, Nan- cy Pierce and Julie Donahue. Plus Alison Cor- radi was named the Boston Globe All-Star Player of the Year. They soon moved onto the South Sectionals. After knocking down any op- ponents who got in their way, the road to Nick- erson Field at Boston University for the state finals seemed to be within reach. Sandwich played their final State game against a powerful Quabog team. With only two minutes left in the season, and a 1-1 tied score, co-captain Julie Donahue gave a “give-and-go” to junior Shay Perry, to get the ball down the field to score the winning goal. Goal tender Kristie Case proved to be one of the best goalies in the State, as she kept out several quickly fired shots. But everyone’s efforts made the championship one to be shared. The Lady Blue Knights came through brilliantly this past season with a 22-0- 0 record. It’ll be a season never to forget!!!
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
This season’s state championship field hockey team had a core of very skillful seniors. Co- captain Nancy Pierce was the backbone of the defense and co-captain Julie Donahue was the speedy left wing who could put the ball in the goal when the pressure was on. Tara Mandy was a tricky stickhandler able to outsmart op- ponents and get the ball to the forwards. Kirstin Childs, quick on offense and a fantastic im- provement over the past two years, was an outstanding asset to the team. Stacy Reis and Lisa LaMontagne were two very strong defen- sive players who were very successful at keep- ing the ball away from the goal.

Sandwich High’s Cross Country Teams ended their season with respectful performances in the South Shore League. With the efforts of several proficient runners, Sandwich competed in competitive tournaments such as the Catho- lic Memorial invitationals.
The boy’s squad finished its season with a ven- erable 5-8 overall record and a 2nd place finish in the Division II, SSL. Senior co-captain and league All-Star Ted Giampietro completed a superb 13-1 season at D-Y to mark the end of a successful high school career as the school course-record holder. Senior captain Dave Hodgkinson’s season included consistent plac- ings in the meets and a spot on the League All- Star team. Up and coming underclassmen have big shoes to fill in later seasons.
The girl’s team enjoyed a favorable 4th place tie in their league with a 5-5 overall record. Senior Megan Helm’s leadership was an aid in unifying the team and earned her the Sports Boosters’ Sportsmanship Award. Many skillful runners will remain on the team and are opti- mistic about coming seasons.

The 1987 soccer season was a history making one for the girls of Sandwich High. After 3 years of playing as a club sport. Coach Russ Norton was able to tell his players that they were offi- cially a Varsity Team.
With a 1-18-1 record, the three senior tri-cap- tains Noelle Lilly, Michelle Benoit, and Jennifer Names lead the young 24 member team through a tough but exciting season. A closely scored tie with Middleboro half-way through the season and an incredible 2-1 Homecoming win over Dennis-Yarmouth were the high points of the girls’ season.
Strong senior players included fullback Sa- mantha Sands, halfback Melissa Dugan, half- back Kara Lucas, and sweeperback-transfer Christine Breault who was elected to the All- Star League.
The outlook for next year is very promising with a good mix of juniors, sophomores, and soon to be seniors.

The Sandwich Varsity Basketball teann quali- fied for State Tournament play for the first time in four years. Their overall record is 10-5 and league record of 9-4, has them In command of second place behind league foe, Cohasset, in the South Shore League, small school division.
The Blue Knights, coached by Michael O'Brien have successfully made a name for themselves. No longer are they an easy win for opponents in the South Shore League, as they were in the first year. A combination of depth coming off the bench and a balance in scoring, five players are averaging in double figures, are the big reasons for the improvement.
Three juniors also start for the Knights: Center Paul Anacki grabs many rebounds and lots of points. Forward Jon Root, new to Sandwich this year, causes havoc with his quickness and ability to become open for the ball. Darren Fee- ley has a deadly outside shot, whose last sec- ond three pointer put the Flull game into over- time, which Sandwich won 78-72, is the last of the starting five.
Other substitutes include juniors Terence Mur- phy and Jim Rogers, guards; and forwards Bobby Vaughn, John Donahue and Justin Gallant.

The team is led by captains Steve Rivoira and Darby MacEacheron with Steve leading the team in points and blocked shots, while Darby controls the point guard position and accumu- lates many assists. Other seniors include: Ted Hickey, whose low post work keeps opponents off the boards; Brendan Fish, an important sixth man contributing both on defense as well as offense; and Marty Cosgrove, whose dedi- cation and enthusiasm carries over to all the other players.

The Girls Varsity Basketball team has pulled all their strengths together to come up with a great offensive, as well as defensive team. Their main goal this year was to create more fast breaks. With all the speed on this team the fast break has become a normal routine. With all the injuries and sickness they had this season, its easy to see just how much depth there is in the team. Whenever one of the starters was sick or injured, they had many reliable players come off the bench to help out. Their impres- sive league and all-around record shows the team’s hard work and dedication. The Lady Knights are also looking forward to going to the State Tournament.

Julie Donahue, senior tri-captain, is returning as a fourth year starter for the Varsity team. She has one of the best outside shots on the team, and has an average of 14 points per game.
Susie Sykes, senior tri-captain, is also returning as a fourth year starter for the Varsity. She is one of the most dominating rebounders in the league. Susie is responsible for starting fast- breaks during the game, and averages 10 points per game.
Nancy Pierce, senior tri-captain, is returning for her third year on Varsity. Nancy’s strongest asset is her great defense.

This season, the hockey team was off to a slow start but began to pick up and play hockey by mid-season. The delayed start is attributed to the loss of six seniors to break last year’s strong offense. The young team, with five junior high players, had several early season injuries that hurt the team. Along with the seniors, many players contributed heavily to the Blue Knights Hockey. Junior Lance Brady played great defense as both the Cape Cod and South Shore League highest scoring defenseman. Jon Earle hustled all year playing both forward and defense. Junior goal tender, Steve Davis, shared the net with Jack Harrington for a strong year. Other players showed a lot of abili- ty and potential including: Jon Besch, Eric Sta- hura and Chris Casey. The team should contin- ue to improve and use skills learned in practice to bring home the Canal Cup again this year!

Six seniors supported this year’s hockey team. Captain Steve Corradi, a six year Varsity letter- man, has over 200 career points and 100 ca- reer goals. As the center, Steve is the number one scorer on the Cape and one of the best players in Massachusetts. Defenseman and as- sistant captain, Kevin McLaughlin, on the varsi- ty team for four years, is a good team leader who plays well in all situations. Goalie Jack Harrington, played well throughout his second varsity season. Kyle Chaffee, an intense player on Varsity for three years, moves the puck well on defense. Playing both forward and defense, Andrew Licciardi has been on Varsity for four years. Forward Tim Wenzel, a real competitor, has played Varsity hockey for two years. Tom Dowd, a forward, who possesses a fine shot, has played varsity hockey for three years.

BOY’S SWIMMING MAKES A SPLASH

The 1987-88 season proved promising for the Sandwich High School Boys’ Swim Team. After a one year absence, the team returned to the Southern Conference with much young talent as well as a few veterans. The overall achieve- ment and individual successes of Sandwich have earned the team respect from many of the division one schools in the league.
Sandwich swimmers began their season with an opening at the Relay Carnival at Durfee. Several close meets demonstrated strong po- tential for future teams. Sandwich was a violent threat to Durfee as neck-on-neck competition persisted until the final relay event. Sandwich posted a dominating win against Taunton for the home crowd. Several Sandwich swimmers were able to qualify for the state sectional meet.

After four years on the boys swim team, four senior swim- mers will leave behind venera- ble accomplishments. Chris Cote, Kirt Switzer, Rich Kunkel and Chris Leavell, each quali- fied for the state sectional tournament. Cote, a co-cap- tain, was proficient at the backstroke and freestyle sprints. The other captain, Switzer, fared well from the 50 yd. to 500 yard freestyle events. Kunkel played a signif- icant role in distance events such as the 200 yd. and 500 yard races. Leavell provided strength in the individual med- ley and butterfly events. This awesome senior freestyle relay combination was undefeated during this swim season.

The girls swim team faced a comeback this season with the pool being closed for a year, and the division of the swimmers into two sepa- rate varsity teams, girls and boys. Seven of the girls, including senior Lise Lague, competed in the South Sectionals, based upon qualifying times during the season. The team wrapped up the season with four wins and five losses, and the future looks extremely positive.

The two seniors on the team, Lise Lague and Jennifer Fra- ser, proved to be most benefi- cial. Lise excelled in her diving competitions and did very well in the backstroke and medley relay, with this being her first year at Sandwich and having been a team swimmer for twelve years at previous schools in Texas. Jen Fraser, a team member for two years, decided to put her enthusiasm into managing, and met with success.

Cheerleaders play an impor- tant role in promoting school spirit. This year the dedication that was exhibited by soccer, hockey, and basketball squads at SHS was tremendous.
Soccer will be losing four se- nior cheerleaders this year. The spirit demonstrated by Tracey Bromley, Shelley Mattes, Tracy Ouirk, and cap- tain Joellen Bombardier will be greatly missed.

The Junior Varsity Soccer team fin- ished its fourth consecutive \winning season with a 9-4-2 record. The team was captained by Kevin Shea and John Curley, both of whom were brought up to Varsity for post-season play. The team recorded key wins against Rockland and Whitman-Han- son, both by a score of 3-1. The team’s leading scorer was sophomore Mike Sheppard. The defensive back- bone of the team was made up of John Curley, Matt Straut, Kevin Shea, and sensational goalie Erik Hufnagle who is just a freshman.
Coached by Cheryl Burlingame, the Junior Varsity Field Hockey team fin- ished the season undefeated, with only two goals scored against them. The team, as a whole, was outstand- ing with the defense just as powerful as the offense. With all the speed and terrific stick skills it is easy to see how they managed to remain undefeated. We will be looking to these young Lady Knights to fill in for the Varsity squad next year.
Although they got off to a slow start, the 1987-88 Junior Varsity Boys' Bas- ketball team had an overall good sea- son. This year’s Junior Varsity team was made up of mostly freshmen with only two of last year’s members re- turning, who are Matt Straut and Chris O’Connor. Coached by Mr. Robert In- man, the team continued to improve throughout the season.
The Junior Varsity Girl’s Basketball team, coached by Dawn Rogers, has greatly improved since the early prac- tices in November. The speed and agility of this J.V. team has put them ahead of many other teams. Several of these girls play both Varsity and Junior Varsity. The experience on both teams has provided a great deal of depth to the Lady Knights.
Coached by Alex Smith, JV Hockey has improved since the beginning of the year. There are 26 players, seven of whom came down from Varsity to help out. Jack Harrington and Steve Davis goaltend. The team plays their hardest for a good game and plan on peaking at the JV Canal Cup.

The newest addition to Sand- wich Sports this year has been the freshmen sports teams. These teams include: soccer, field hockey, and boy’s bas- ketball. The main goal of this addition is to allow more stu- dents to have the opportunity to participate in organized sports. It also provides more individualized coaching and in- struction for the participants. As a result, these athletes will be better skilled when tryouts for the J.V. and Varsity teams take place.

Creating a high school year- book can prove to be an ex- tremely harrowing experience, so this year’s Lancer s\a\\ be- gan preparing in early July at yearbook camp sponsored by Jostens Printing and Publish- ing. This camp taught staff members including: Jen Fra- ser, Cheryl Canning, Leander Dubreuil, Lori Dawes, and Mi- chelle Baldi, how to prepare lay-outs, make copy, and showed them “what’s hot & what’s not’’, to make this year’s edition of Lancer a success.
The Lancer staff, along with Mrs. Wallin’s publications class who wrote most of the copy, worked hard to keep ev- erything in order, and meet each pressing deadline.
For the first year in many, SHS has had a professional pho- tographer, Mr. Bob Talbott from Westwood Studios, who has been responsible for se- nior portraits and other pho- tography. Jostens’ represen- tative, Mr. Norval Garnett has helped the staff to perfect the yearbook. Co-advisors, Mrs. Antis and Mrs. Wallin, deserve a special vote of thanks for all the headaches and sleepless nights they have endured, and for the time they have sacri- ficed for Lancer 1988.

Homecoming ’87
Sandwich spirit is alive and well, espe- cially apparent for Homecoming 1987 which was filled with new innovations and great old traditions. Annual spirit week, which this year sported tie-dye day, dress-up day, and of course, blue and white day, touched off an exciting series of events. The pep rally was held outside at the soccer field again, where SHS students enjoyed the se- nior class’s entertaining efforts, in- cluding a pie-eating contest, tug of war, and a Blue Knight mascot. A spectacular performance was given by the marching band.
Homecoming, Saturday, October 24, 1987 began early, as a parade of car- toon floats streamed through Sand- wich that morning. The sophomore class took first place with the “Disney Characters", seniors were awarded second place for “The Flintstones”, and freshmen came in third with “The Jetsons”. The big games were then played in the bright, fall afternoon: varsity girls soccer, in their first year, defeated D-Y 2-1; varsity field hockey trimphed over E. Bridgewater 3-1; and the varsity soccer team experienced a disheartening 2-2 tie against an old rival, D-Y. The SHS band and color guard again displayed their talents during the halftime show.
Finally, at the semi-formal dance, the queen, Nancy Pierce, and her court; Molly Parece, Kristen O’Hear (grade
9) ; Jen Mann, Jen Litchfield (grade
10) ; Shay Perry, Aimee Daigneault (grade 11); and Amy Besch and Sta- cey Foley (grade 12) were crowned.

Throughout our years at SHS a great number of faculty members have touched our lives. Mr. Roger Savino is an inspiration to his students and a model to the teaching profession. With his dry sense of humor, Mr. Savino makes us laugh at ourselves, but has also given us words of wisdom and taught us many things about life as well.
Mr. Savino started teaching at SHS in 1964. He has contributed his talents and free time towards his students, the administration, and the town of Sandwich. “Mr. Savino is excellent in his dealings with students,’’ commented a faculty member. “He always looks for the best in people and strives to bring out those qualities. He cares greatly about the suc- cess of his students.’’
Mr. Pierce has honored Mr. Savino also, because he believes that Mr. Savino is one of the hardest workers on the faculty. He is completely responsible for most of the endless printing concerning school and town functions. The list includes: prom invitations and glasses, the annual student handbook, graduation certificates and programs, awards, and tee shirts for the band, to name a few. The quality of his student’s work obviously reflects his own ability to both teach and inspire his students.

Mrs. Carole Antis, business department head and yearbook advisor, puts her heart into everything she does at Sandwich High School. She has taught at Sandwich for eight years, and for the past five years she has willingly helped to orga- nize, type, and produce yearbooks for the stu- dents at Sandwich. Much of her time at the high school is spent helping others. Whether it’s a teacher needing zerox copies of their latest test, one of her students requiring help, or someone who just wants a warm smile and a bit of humor, Mrs. Antis is always the one to turn to. Her pa- tience mixed with her business-like manner makes her an easy person to work with. Anyone can easily see why she is one of the favorites chosen by this year’s senior class.
Russell Norton has been chosen as a favorite high school teacher at Sandwich High School. He has been teaching at SHS for five years and is head of the math department. On a daily basis he proves his expansive knowledge of math and his innate sense of relating to, and understanding his students. This combination of talents earns him much respect, and the senior class is very grateful for all of the help that he has given us. When we were without an advisor during our junior year, he lent his support to our class by becoming a co- advisor. His extensive input of ideas and hard work helped to unify the class and made our prom one of the most memorable events of our high school years. Mr. Norton will always be remembered for his unending support to the class of ’88.
Mr. Jack Chisholm, head of the English department, has been with us at Sandwich for 15 years. During this tenure, he has gained the admiration and respect of students and co-workers alike. He is an excellent teacher with an out- standing background who always leaves students in his classes with a better understanding and knowledge of English skills. Mr. Chisholm has also made extremely valu- able contributions to the class of 1988. In our Junior year, he served as one of our dedicated co-advisors and was instumental in planning an extremely successful prom. His vital support in this and many other projects will always be remembered. The class of 1988 salutes him as an educa- tor and advisor.

In the three years that Donald Franke has been teaching at Sandwich High, he has become one of the students’ favorite teachers. His sense of humor and avid interest in history make his classes partic- ularly exciting. Due to his genuine con- cern for students, he is looked upon as a friend. Few students at SHS can boast that they have had a teacher who has taught mate- rial in an effdfctive and interesting way while at the same time making them laugh. Freshman and senior English teacher, Jeannie Wallin, has an easygoing but supportive manner which makes learning in her classes, relaxed and fun. With fourteen years of teaching experi- ence, ten spent at Sandwich, Mrs. Wallin can often be remembered for her hysteri- cally fuhny stories and her ability to relate to her students on a personal level. It is perhaps this unusual ability to demand excellence from her students in a way that is encouraging, that makes Mrs. Wallin one of the best loved teachers at Sand- wich High School.

Studenft remember Mrs. Lorraine Lu- pone, their 8th grade math teacher, for her concern for students. Mrs. Lupone’s ability to make math understandable and interesting earned her the respect of her students. She also stressed the impor- tance of education, and prepared us well for our high school years.
Mrs. Lupone donated her guidance and leadership to help in the task of unifying our class. Many fond memories include the ski trips she organized and the advice she contributed to our class.
Her down to earth personality and ability in teaching earned her much respect as an admired junior high teacher.

Mary Winings is considered a favorite ju- nior high teacher by the class of 1988. Her enthusiasm in civics class created an enjoyable learning atmosphere for her students. Mock courts and individual re- ports on states were some of the projects that Mrs. Winings assigned that we all remember. Mrs. Winings warm smile and endless understanding greeted us each day and made life in junior high a little more bearable. Her special kindness and caring way has made Mrs. Winings a teacher that we will never forget.

Mr. Doug Jenkins has taught Grade 6 at the Wing School since 1975. This year’s seniors remember him for his warm smile and humorous antics. He was always there if you needed someone to talk to or just needed some assistance in under- standing a subject. A few fond memories of his class included: placing gum on your nose if you were caught chewing it, and the actual witnessing of chickens’ hatching.
Mr. Jenkins was shocked and full of joy to learn that the class of ’88 would remem- ber their sixth grade teacher and elect him as their favorite elementary school teacher.

Once you found out that Mr. Arthur Alien- brook was going to be your sixth grade teacher, you knew you were one ot the lucky ones. He was tunny, caring and easy to get along with. Not only did he make class interesting, but as students we loved going to his class. A general response from those who have had Mr. Allenbrook was, “He was cool’’, which Is about the highest praise a teacher can receive from a student.

A name often associated with elemen- tary school memories is that of sixth grade teacher Mrs. “Bunny” Belliveau. Mrs. Belliveau is the hysterical tunny language arts teacher who has taught at the elementary school tor 18 years. “I teach the basics — spelling, reading, and language”, commented Mrs. Belli- veau whose classroom this year is af- fectionately referred to as, “Belliveau’s Bunker.” Famous tor the stories she works into her lessons, and the social studies class she taught on Henry the 8th, and his “six chicks”, Mrs. Belli- veau feels the most rewarding thing about teaching is her “association with children”, and “I love to rap with kids.”

Claire Gilfoy was always one who put oth- ers first. Mrs. Gilfoy, who worked in the high school cafeteria, passed away this summer after a battle with cancer. She was involved with the school lunch pro- gram for 10 years. During that time, fellow workers and students remember the smile she had for everyone.
Claire Gilfoy will not be forgotten, for she was one of those very special people who will always be remembered for her kind- ness, determination and spirit.

"The Breakfast Club" hit Sandwich High with the '88 Se- nior Class play, "Class Dismissed", by Craig J. Nevius. This classroom comedy, subtitled "they thought it could never happen in suburbia”, takes place at Central High School. Mr. Banks, an English teacher who is unhappy with his students attitudes, takes five of them hostage.
As in any show, particularly a senior class play, rehersals were chaotic and filled with crazy antics. The frequently changing faces of the cast were worrisome, but the show turned out well and was fun for all!
