Terms Governing This Sale

Bidders unknown to us will please furnish bank or other refer- ences or deposit 25 per cent with their bids and it is agreed that remit- tance will be made upon receipt of invoice if references are not fur- nished.

Any coin which is not satisfactory may be returned within five days from date of receipt for full refund. You must be satisfied. PAY- MENT TO BE MADE UPON RECEIPT OF MERCHANDISE Coins re- main our property until paid for. There will be no charge for executing your bids but the purchasers will be required to pay the postage and in- surance on their purchases. If you do not wish coins sent airmail please note this on your bid sheet.

We shall welcome your bids and will try to purchase the coins as much below your bids as possible. PLEASE BID BY THE LOT. Un- limited bids are executed at an advance of 5 per cent over the next highest bid. Numbers in ( ) are the quantity of that item.

If you are interested in any particular coin, we shall be glad to have you write us for full information. LOTS CANNOT BE BROKEN. Be sure you bid on the correct lot as we cannot be responsible for errors in bidding.

NOTICE TO NEW BIDDERS

Our Mail Auction Sales Are Conducted in the Following

1. Bids are entered in the order received; if identical bids are re- ceived, the first bidder is awarded the lot. SEND BIDS AIRMAIL — IT PAYS

2. The highest bidder on the date of the sale is awarded the coin at a slight advance over the second highest bidder. Bids you send in are the

maximum you are willing to pay for the coin. WE, AS YOUR AGENT, TRY TO BUY THE COIN AS LOW AS THE NEXT HIGHEST BID WILL ALLOW.

3. Valuations placed in the auction catalog are catalog prices, prices generally asked by dealers when the coin is in stock, or prices generally

realized at auctions. „ _

ANY COIN WHICH IS NOT AS REPRESENTED MAY BE RETURN- ED WITHIN FIVE DAYS FROM DATE OF RECEIPT FOR FULL RE- FUND. YOU TO BE THE SOLE JUDGE AS TO CONDITION. YOU MUST BE SATISFIED. No, you won’t receive a nasty letter for return- ing a coin— instead you will receive a letter thanking you for calling at- tention to the error made in cataloging. While we try to describe coins as accurately as possible, it is inevitable that an occasional error is made in the cataloging of thousands of coins each month. Whenever this happens, we want it called to our attention to help orevent future

errors#

The coins will be on display the day of the sale at our offices and can be seen by appointment any day prior to the sale.

If you are not interested in these sales, won’t you advise us so we may discontinue sending you catalogs.

YOU WILL WANT A PRICE LIST OF THIS SALE TO KNOW WHAT COINS ARE BRINGING

PRICE LIST OF SALE $1.00

IS THIS YOUR FIRST AUCTION CATALOG?

Proof coins, branch mints 1892-1934 unc., currency «r^d commemorative^

seem to be rising the most rapidly at present with most bringing close to listed values and a great number bringing even more. Many are rising from month to month with a number “just not obtainable." The coins most in demand will have the greatest number of bidders and with the law of supply and demand working, these coins keep setting new records.

Occasionally a collector writes us asking why our estimated values in some instances are higher than the catalog listing. This occurs when the demand is so great and the supply so small that new records are set whenever these coins come upon the market. If one will take a few moments to reflect, he will understand that it takes several months to compile the necessary information before the catalog can be published, therefore, it is inevitable that the catalog listing will be under the prevailing market price on the items in popular de- mand at the time of the publication. The estimated prices are entered only, a. ter careful examination of the results obtained in our past sales which reflect the actual and not theoretical value. (PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY OF THE ESTIMATES ARE CATALOG VALUE ONLY. MANY OF THE GOLD COINS, SILVER $1, WASHINGTON QUARTERS, ETC. ARE ESTIMATED AT CATALOG.) in the final analysis, you the collector, are the one who sets the price.

BIDS ARE RECORDED AS FOLLOWS: Each bid sheet is given a number as it comes in, and the bids are recorded. In the event of identical bids, the first bidder receives the lot. At the last day of the sale, the books are closed with the highe.t bidder on each lot being awarded the lot at an advance of not over 5% above the next highest bidder. For illustration — the two highest bids received on a lot may be $17 and $20. The highest bidder who bid $20 would receive the lot at $17.25. We act as your agent and use your bids as a limit — not as a final bid unless we are forced to do so to obtain the lot. We accept unlimited bids which generally assures the bidder of obtaining that lot regardle:s of what the highest bid may be. Where the lot is bringing far more than we believe it is worth or in the event of two unlimited bidders on the same lot, we notify the unlimited bidders by phone or wire, if necessary, in order to obtain a fixed limit to the bid. Even the auction purchases are sup- posed to be final, we do not want you to keep any lots which you believe are improperly described. We endeavor to treat our customers as we would wish to be treated. Coin collecting is a personal hobby which makes life a little more pleasant. We try to keep it on a friendly basis and value the many friends we have made thru the years. If you have any complaints, we want to hear them as well as any compliments.

YOUR SUCCESSFUL BIDS WILL INSURE YOUR RECEIVING THESE SUCCESSIVE CATALOGS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION.

BARGAINS GALORE

In every sale, some lots go at “bargain prices." May we suggest that in addition to bidding on those lots you “really want," you place nominal bids on those lots that “you might buy if they went at bargain prices." While you may not obtain many of these “bargain lots," yet in every sale you may pick up some real bargains.

Sincerely,

A. M. KAGIN and PAUL KAGIN.

YOU MUST BE SATISFIED

Our Sales Are Cataloged With You in Mind. If you have any suggestions, complaints, compliments (yes we receive some now and then), we want to hear them. Having cataloged over one hundred ninety successful coin auctions, we believe we are qualified to advise and help you with your numismatic problems. No, we don't “know-it-all" but we do know where to obtain the information we don't have.

We have a number of want lists on hand for the scarce and rare United States coins and currency. Our average commission for obtaining these speci- mens is only 10 per cent, therefore we believe we can pay the top price for your choice and scarce pieces, no matter how rare. Don't you think it is worth a 64 airmail stamp ‘o find out what we would pay for your outstanding pieces? Naturally we buy collections, too.

SOMETHING NEW HAS BEEN ADDED

We wish to call your attention to the new service extended as per the bottom of the bid sheet. After receiving requests to apply the amount saved in the awarding of successful bids below the bids authorized we decided to avail this service to all of our clients. It is often exasperating to lose a lot by a few nickels when the amount saved on the successful bids would have been sufficient to increase the original bid to the point necessary to receive the lot. Check the bottom of your bid sheet.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

The forepart of this sale was cataloged using the 1955 Guidebook; while in most of the latter part the 1956 edition was used. Please remember, THE CATALOG IS BASED ON PAST PRICES (RECORDS OF AUCTIONS AND PRICE LISTS) NOT ON WHAT THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE AT TIME OF ISSUE OF THE CATALOG. Since the information in the Catalog was compiled in the spring, it is inevitable that popular and rare coins will generally keep ad- vancing and by the time the catalog is published, they will be bringing more than the new catalog valuations.

Consignment A — Texas

NATIONAL BANK NOTES— FIRST CHARTERS

We have divided these into three main groups with one sub-variety. GROUP I has small rayed red seal without charter number and with serial numbers in red 1863-1872. GROUP 1A (sub-variety) has the serial numbers in blue which are about three times as scarce as the red numbers and bring about 50 per cent more than the red. GROUP II has additional overprint of the charter number twice in large red numerals 1872-1875. GROUP III is over- printed SERIES 1875 and the seal is slightly larger and scalloped. There are about five different papers used in the first charters which were printed by several different private companies in addition to the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Above information based upon studies of the KAGIN REFERENCE COLLECTION in addition to the notes we have handled. We now have in stock the LARGEST COLLECTION OF NATIONALS EVER FORMED (OVER $50,000.00 FACE ALL DIFFERENT). Anyone collecting nationals by states or cities is invited to submit a want list — notes will be sent on approval in sequence of orders received. Incidentally, while nationals are the last field to develop in currency popularity, we believe that in years to come they will prove to be in greatest demand.

SECOND CHARTER PERIOD 1882— BROWN BACKS—

GROUP I

There seems to be an increasing number of collectors attempting to make a collection of all the different states since the state seal is different for each state. Should be fun as well as profitable to start now while prices are rea- sonable. Those with control letters are a little scarcer than those without. Group 1 are without control letters. Group II are with.

While we consider the adding of the control letter as a major sub-variety, the changing of the backing and obligation of the basic design from SE- CURED BY UNITED STATES BONDS" to "SECURED BY UNITED STATES BONDS OR OTHER SECURITIES" to be a distinctive series (note similar change in obligation and backing from 1 882 brown backs to 1 882 green backs). CURRENCY— DEMAND NOTE

With the pending issue of the new Friedberg book on currency this fall, col- lectors who are still thinking in terms of prices of the last edition of two years ago are due for a rude awakening. Many will be 50% to 250% higher but the more popular notes will naturally sell over the new prices. The reason is quite simple — prices are determined by supply and demand. With the demand con- stantly increasing, the popular and rare notes will continually advance so by the time the new book is published, they will have advanced beyond the prices estab- lished in the book based upon information submitted several months previous (it takes several months to compile and publish a book). We have been paying over catalog for scarce and rare notes for almost two years now but find very little available. Naturally, the less popular notes will bring varying discounts from catalog — depending on how many bidders are interested in them.

CHOICE LARGE CENTS 1798-1814

This is the balance of the outstanding collection we started to catalog in our last sale. A note to the “Old Timers" — If you have not carefully studied the market the last two years on choice and rare large cents, you will probably be shocked at present day prices. Large Cents (choice and rare ones) have finally arrived with new records being set rather frequently whenever an outstanding collection comes upon the market. We believe that present day prices will appear as “bargains" two or three years hence.

DOUBLE EAGLES ($20 GOLD)

At present day prices (some bring only a few dollars over actual gold value) we feel it would be wise to collect gold. Certainly, they can t go any lower, and with all the new collectors coming into the hobby it is inevitable that increased demand will start prices upward. We note the new Guidebook (as per our prediction) has recognized the in- creased demand for early fives and the CC mints. We believe there will be a sharp increase in demand (and values) in these two fields with the C and D

mints following not far behind.

1168. 1879 Flowing Hair, BRILLIANT PROOF. VERY RARE. When

the coin cataloged $800 it was bringing in the neighborhood of $1,000. It wasn't so long ago when $100 to $200 was "too high" for it. Naturally, when it brings $2,000 in the not too distant future, it will still be "too high." THE "TOO HIGH"

COINS GENERALLY PROVE TO BE THE BEST INVESTMENT IN THE LONG RUN. Now that it catalogs $950 we note dealers (when it is available) are asking $1,100.00

$3 GOLD

We note the new catalog has made substantial advances in the values re- flecting increased demand, however these valuations compiled in the Spring have already been outstripped. Many now bring substantial premiums over catalog (there are a number we would gladly pay over catalog to obtain for our customers). WE BELIEVE THIS SERIES IS SOMEWHAT UNDERVALUED IN KEEPING WITH THE STRONG DEMAND AND SMALL SUPPLY.

We note the new catalog has substantially advanced the values, but as usual, they are still behind the market. PANAMA PACIFIC $50 GOLD

Quite popular and rapidly rising in value. They have advanced about 50 per cent in value during the past year and appear destined to repeat the performance during the coming year.

55

PANAMA PACIFIC $50 GOLD (Continued)

1388. 1915 $50 Cotagon, obverse helmeted head of Minerva, reverse

owl, symbol of wisdom, brilliant uncirculated. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE COIN. THE ONLY $50 GOLD COIN ISSUED BY THE U. S. Of the 645 originally issued, we doubt if more

than 300 or so exist today and of course, only a fraction of these are still in the original state of preservation. We note the new catalog has advanced it $400 in value. Last year when it was $750 it was "too high." Next year when it prob- ably will be $2250 it will still be "too high." Naturally, it is "too high" now at $1,500.00

1389. 1915 $50 Round, brilliant uncirculated. ONLY 483 ISSUED

OF WHICH WE DOUBT MORE THAN 250 ARE STILL IN EXISTENCE. Of these, only a fraction are still in the original state of preservation. The catalog had advanced it $450 in value (as of last spring when the book was compiled). Last year it was "too high" at $1,000; next' year when it prob- ably will be $2500 it will still be "too high." Or course it is now "too high" at $1,650.00

We were recently asked, "How high can they go?" In our opinion, they will rise indefinitely as long as more collectors come into the hobby than drop out. You can't beat the law of supply and demand. As long as millions of the Whitman coin folders are sold, we know the demand for U. S. coins will keep growing. At the same time, some of the coins are "accidentally spent," lost by fire, flood, etc. We can remember when Pan Pacific sets sold at $500 in the 1930's. When the sets reach $10,000.00, present day collectors will reflect on "the good old days" (today) when sets could be obtained at a fraction. We have seen the process repeated constantly during our twenty- odd years as professionals.

56

*

LATE PROOF SETS

Literally rising from month to month with some having doubled in value during the past year. They appear headed for a repeat performance. The greatest "bargain" is the opportunity to acquire the coin. We constantly receive letters from collectors who state that they wish they had bid a little higher and obtained the coins — now they are winding up paying substantially more (if the coin is available). Nearly all the better collections have been built by "paying a little more." Coins which can usually be obtained "at a little less" are the more common ones which rise slowly for precisely that reason. Coins which "bring a little more" are most in demand and rise for precisely that reason. Which do you think is the better "bargain in the

"long-run?"

MERCURY DIMES

We note substantial rises in value from year to year; some 40 per cent above last year's catalog. We also note an increasing appreciation among collectors for "gem uncirculated" versus ordinary uncirculated. Keep in

mind that coins are struck for circulation and not for collectors. In a roll of "uncirculated" coins (even current ones) only a very small proportion would muster the "gem" classification. We note the catalog recognizes this fact with the notation that choice specimens of Lincoln cents, Buffalo nickels, Li- berty Standing quarters and Liberty Walking halves are worth substantially more. WE BELIEVE THAT IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO THE CATALOG WILL RECOGNIZE THE SAME RELATIVE RARITY IN MERCURY DIMES. Of

course at that time gems will bring substantially more.

ROOSEVELT DIMES

One of the most spectacular rises in numismatic history is taking place in this short series. Many have literally doubled in value in two to three months time.

LIBERTY STANDING QUARTERS

We note a number of advances in the new catalog; some as high as 35 per cent. We note the notation stating that FULL HEAD quarters are worth more has become more realistic and been changed from "approximately 25 per cent above" to a general statement. Some (from experience) are more difficult to obtain in FULL HEAD than others.

1927-S Extremely fine. RARE. An excellent example of a true "bargain.” When the coin cataloged $110 last year it was bringing $150 (when obtainable). Now that it catalogs $150 uncirculated it will probably bring closer to $200. The collector who bought it at $150 when it cataloged $110 NOW HAS IT while the collector who was trying to obtain it at $110 or less is in all probability still looking for it. No doubt he is now willing to poy $150 for it now that it is listed at that in the catalog but we doubt if he will be successful. Why? Because the prices in the catalog wars compiled in the spring and by the time the catalog is published, it is behind the market on scarce end popular coins. THE CATALOG FOL- LOWS THE MARKET AND DOES NOT PRECEDE IT.

BUFFALO NICKELS

We note the new catalog shows an advance in value on every single Buf- falo nickel in uncirculated! Naturally, we are quite pleased to see our think-

76

, ing corroborated that choice coins will show a steady advance in value and

prove to be a good investment. Below the heading we notice the following, ■"Well-struck (what we call gems) pieces dated prior to 1935 have substantially higher values." We have arrived at what these values are after careful re-

search based on supply and demand.
