INTRODUCTORY
The Baltimore City Directory for 1915, herewith presented, indicates in no uncertain way the rapid and substantial growth the city is making. As in previous years, everything" possible has been done to make the work accurate and complete. To those who have aided in its successful production, either by their patron- age or by furnishing necessary data, our cordial acknowledge- ments are returned.
BIG, BUSY, BUSTLING BALTIMORE OFFERS
Everything an industrial enterprise may need. Unsurpassed rail- road facilities, good w^ater supply, fine shipping terminals, most fortunate geographical position, attractive sites for manufacturing plants, nearness to coal, iron fields and raw materials of various kinds, superabundance of cheap power, moderate real estate values, finest dock facilities, sanitary s-ew^erage system, smooth paved streets, efficient fire department, proximity to sources of most diversified food supply at the lowest cost of any large city in the United States, and an industrious and intelligent population.
THE PANAMA CANAL TRADE.
Baltimore's close proximity to the Atlantic ocean is signifi- cant. A glance at any map of the United States will reveal to the shipping world what a highly important geographical and strategical position the city holds when the matter of the Panama Canal is taken into consideration. Baltimore is bound to secure a big share of the canal trade. Its middle location on the Atlantic Seaboard and its advantageous inland railroad connections should make it one of the commanding shipping and distributing ports for incoming and outgoing canal commerce.
THE HARBOR OF BALTIMORE.
Baltimore has a splendid harbor. The channel leading from Baltimore is 35 feet deep and 600 feet wide, and there is a project under way to deepen it to 40 feet and to make it 1,000 feet wide.
Baltimore is on the Patapsco River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, and is about 150 nautical miles from the Atlantic Ocean as vessels travel. The harbor may be said to begin where the Patapsco and the bay meet, about 14 miles from the centre of the city.
There are 38 miles of d'ockage and water-front within the city limits, and many times that extent in its environs.
Baltimore harbor can accommodate the largest vessels. Bal- timore has a busy water-front. It is very picturesque, and is a terminal for all manner of craft, from the ponderous Atlantic liner to the Chesapeake Bay oyster pungy.
Baltimore has always been a prominent scaj^ort city, and until the time came for the passing out of the sailing vessel from a trade world-wide the famous Baltimore clipper was monarch of the sea.
BALTIMORE DIRF.CTORY 1915 11
At this port, in 1905, the Dewey, the largest floating dry dock in the world, was constructed and towed to the Philippines (the greatest feat ever attempted in trans-oceanic navigation).
The harbor is safe, commodious and well sheltered. A land- locked harbor, with an average tide of but 18 inches and a depth of 35 feet up to the docks, provides for the transatlantic steamers. Including appropriations for 1915, the City of Baltimore has expended, through the Harbor Board for dredging harbor and ad- ministration, two and three-quarter million dollars, and for public wharves and docks and wide marginal streets over nine million dollars. In addition to this, the National Government has expended to date more than nine million dollars on channel approaches to the port of Baltimore. AN AGGREGATE OF NEARLY TWENTY-ONE MILLION DOLLARS.
RAILROAD FACILITIES.
Two of the most important divisions of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company converge in Baltimore. The Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Branch and the Northern Central Branch make it easy to ship to any possible point covered by the entire Pennsylvania system. The company has an extensive net- work of trackage, together with numerous elevators and other up-to-date transportation facilities. The tracks of the company are found in every part of the city. Its northern, southern and uestern connections are unlimited.
Baltimore is the home of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Its administrative offices are here. Its tracks reach out into all parts of the city. It is a great system, and reaches out with con- nections in every possible direction.
Baltimore is the main terminus of the Western Maryland Railroad, which is closely affiliated with the great New York Central system.
The Maryland and I'ennsylvania Railroad traverses tiie north- ern section of the State and reaches out into important trade fields in the State of Pennsylvania.
All railroad and steamboat companies have advantageous traffic arrangements with the Atlantic Coast Line, the Southern Railway, the Chesapeake and Ohio, the Norfolk and Western and the Seaboard Air Line, making Baltimore the best distributing point in the United States for the large and rapidly increasing Southern business.
WATER FACILITIES.
Baltimore has an extensive chain of splendid docks. They are owned by the city and leased upon the most attractive terms. These docks have been built by the municipality since the great fire of 1904, and they are among the best of their kind in the United States. A 35-foot channel, private docks and salable water- fronts are plentiful.
The Pennsylvania Railroad system, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad system and the Western Maryland Railroad system run directly to the water front.
Magnificent factory lots, with both water and railroad con- nections, are available. They are for ^ale or lease. There is a free lighterage zone along the water-front for certain classifica-
12 1915 R- L. POLK & CO.'S
tions of freight in carload lots, by virtue of which factories and other industries not actually on a railroad line can enjoy the advan- tages of railroad connections.
POWER.
Baltimore is at the very threshold of the great Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia coal regions. Vast volumes of coal literally pour into the city — coming in daily at cheap rates, from every nearby mine.
Negotiations are pending for the introduction of natural gas, thereby giving Baltimore additional manufacturing advantages.
Baltimore's electric possibilities are unlimited. Connections with McCall's Ferry, on the Susquehanna, which is generating a superabundant supply of current, has opened up for this city great possibilities where electricity is needed for power. The big Elec- tric Light and Power Company of Baltimore is developing a number of very attractive propositions for the service of indus- trial projects. Baltimore has the cheapest rates for electric power of any city on the Atlantic Seaboard.
A HOME CITY.
The real estate market is handled upon a basis in this city that makes it more than easy for a Baltimore laboring man to own his own home. That is why so large a percentage of Baltimore's laboring element are home dwellers, not tenement dwellers. The real estate system in Baltimore enables purchasers to buy on the easiest imaginable payments.
BANKING FACILITIES.
Baltimore has numerous banks and trust companies. Recent consolidations have produced a series of big financial institutions. The financial leaders have caught the step of twentieth century progress and are ready to do their part in promoting the future development of industrial Baltimore. It has the best and biggest bonding companies in the world.
BIG PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS.
The city is engaged in advancing a series of the most splendid and far-reaching public improvements. Few cities in the Union can show an equal degree of progressiveness in that direction. The physical conditions of the city are being perfected, and addi- ti(jnal facilities with which to handle business expeditiously are being rapidly developed.
Despite the expenditure of these big sums for public improve- ment, the city government, by wise and discriminating economies, has caused a substantial drop in the city tax rate.
A MECCA FOR TOURISTS.
Baltimore is just 45 minutes distant by trains running every hour on two roads from the nation's capital, Washington. An electric railroad, unsurpassed in equipment and roadbed, running its trains on a 30-minute schedule, connects the heart of Balti- niore with that of Washington in 70 minutes. The City of Annap-
UALTIMORE DIRECTORY 1915 13
olis, rich in national historic associations and interest, is reached in 30 minutes by trolley. At Annapolis is located the Naval Acad- emy, the most beautiful of all the properties maintained by the National Government, where millions of dollars have in the last few years been spent.
Atlantic City can be reached from Baltimore in three hours on daily through trains. Philadelphia is two hours away, and New York is four hours from Baltimore. Richmond and Old Point Comfort, Virginia, can be reached on mag-nificent steamships leaving Baltimore daily. There are many beautiful bay and river trips, which will delight visitors who have time to take them. Excursions, running 30 or 40 miles down the beautiful Chesapeake Bay and to the \arious resorts on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, one of the garden spots of the world. Pen-Mar, in the Blue Ridge, is only a short ride distant, and Harper's Ferry and the mountain resorts of Western Maryland will invite pleasant stop-overs. The great battlefield of Gettysburg, the one place to which every Amer- ican citizen should at least make one visit, is less than two hours distant from Baltimore.
New York alone excepted, IJaltimorc has as good hotel accom- modations as any city in the country.
The street car system of Baltimore is probably unequalled in America. Its long rides for five cents, its finely eguipped cars and a service which railroad men admit to be without a peer, will afiford accommodations to thousands of visitors to enjoy trolley rides nlong the historic Chesapeake Bay and into the picturesque suburbs, with their numerous places of amusement, where smnmer opera, high-class attractions and fine music can l)e had at small cost.
DIRECTORY LIBRARY.
A Directory Library, supplied with current issues of the Directories of the principal cities of the country, is maintained by the publishers at their offices, 1203 and 1205 Calvert Building, for the free use of patrons and the general public, who can refer to it at any time. As the latest books are issued they will be added to the Library, thereby keeping it up to date from year to year.
